The world looks very different today to only a few months ago. That has prompted many entrepreneurs to dream up innovative solutions to the challenges they are facing, giving rise to a host of new ideas. Some of those ideas are undoubtedly gems with a long-term future. This is also a time when we all have to think about how we now want to shape the way we live and work: how do we want to operate from now on? Will things go back to business as usual or will there be permanent changes?
New times? New ideas!
It is more important now than ever before to generate new ideas. That is why BOIP has declared June the 'Month of New Ideas'. We are making it possible for anyone to record their new idea, concept or format online in an i-DEPOT in June free of charge. Not just one idea and only once, but rather as many ideas and as often as you want.
Log your new idea now, so that you can work it up later.
Recording an idea in an i-DEPOT is simple and fast. Within minutes, you will receive an official i-DEPOT certificate, i.e. legal, date-stamped proof of your idea. You can use your certificate to prove that you had the idea on a certain date. This allows you to proceed with working up your idea with a degree of security.
We store your i-DEPOT in a secure environment that is accessible to you alone.
What is an i-DEPOT?
An i-DEPOT is a legal, date-stamped certificate with probative value.
It proves that your creation existed on a certain date.
Recording an idea can be wise if you want to be able to prove later that you created, devised, or designed it.
What is an i-DEPOT not?
An i-DEPOT does not bestow any (intellectual) property right on you.
Like a document drawn up by a notary, it therefore provides no protection.
However, in some instances, it can be useful to be able to prove that you created, devised, or designed something. An i-DEPOT serves that purpose.
What are the benefits?
- An i-DEPOT provides you with legal proof that is valid throughout Europe.
If someone claims to be the one who thought up your creation, your i-DEPOT can help prove otherwise.
An i-DEPOT is an initial step on the path to protecting a new idea or creation that you are developing.
BOIP maintains your i-DEPOT absolutely confidential. It is you who decides if all or part of your i-DEPOT is to be made public or not. You can also create a non-disclosure agreement online linked to your specific i-DEPOT.
Do you have any tips?
Make sure that your concept has been elaborated as far as possible. You cannot protect an idea as such. Example: You have an idea for virtual day trips to sights around the world. You cannot protect that idea as such. That idea can be elaborated in different ways, leading to different types of products and services. Each of which can be protected in a different way. That is why it is important to submit a well-developed concept.
Once you have submitted an i-DEPOT, you cannot add new attachments. The date stamp that you receive only applies to the attachments submitted originally. We recommend that you deposit the new files in a new i-DEPOT and refer to your previous i-DEPOT in the new one.
Why is BOIP running this promotion?
Normally, an i-DEPOT for five years costs 37 euros. However, in June 2020, anyone can submit i-DEPOTs with a storage period of 5 years free of charge. We are running this promotion to give entrepreneurs heart, and because we believe that new ideas are much needed in these extraordinary times. Through this promotion, the Benelux Office for Intellectual Property, is providing its heartfelt support to all those who are devising new ideas. More about BOIP
Is my idea really secure in an i-DEPOT?
Yes, your idea or trade secret is absolutely safe in BOIP's i-DEPOT. Protecting your data is a priority for us. To that end, we have taken appropriate technical and organisational measures to safeguard the availability, integrity and confidentiality of the data we manage in i-DEPOT.
Our information security policy is based on the international standard for information security. In addition, security audits and penetration tests are performed on a regular basis. The results of these audits show time and time again that we have our information security in order. More information
When an i-DEPOT certificate is issued, your data is secured. The services of a qualified trust service provider are used to sign the electronic i-DEPOT certificate, as required by EU Regulation 910/2014 on electronic identification and trust services for electronic transactions in the internal market (eIDAS). i-DEPOT content is not sent anywhere to have the date stamp and signature applied. On the contrary, it remains in a secure (encrypted) environment at BOIP. The end result is a digital certificate, bearing a trustworthy date stamp, that guarantees that the i-DEPOT has not been modified since it was submitted.
BOIP's qualified trust service provider is QuoVadis. QuoVadis complies with an array of independent audits and accreditations, including certification as a qualified Certification Services Provider (CSP) under the ETSI standards and ISO / IEC 27001. An overview of these accreditations and certifications is provided on the QuoVadis website.
Therefore, whatever the content you place in an i-DEPOT, be it an idea, concept or trade secret, you can rest assured that it is held under seal of confidentiality and strictly secured by BOIP.
