Frequently Asked Questions

General (apply for an acccount)

  1. The user name I am using is incorrect
    A user name must be between 5 and 20 characters long and must not contain any spaces. Special characters, such as an accent, cedilla, umlaut or diaeresis above or below a letter, must not be used. Punctuation marks are allowed, except for the character @. Please check whether your user name meets these requirements.
  2. What should I use under 'Account type'?
    Step one is to decide whether you would like to apply for a private account, a sole proprietor's account or a company account. You will later be asked whether you plan to use this account to submit applications for yourself or for third parties (as an intermediary). You could, for instance, apply for a private account, but submit applications for other individuals or businesses as an intermediary. 
  3. I have an account, but I still cannot log on.
    After applying for your account, you will need to activate it. You will receive an activation e-mail for this purpose. After you have activated your account, you will be able to log on.
  4. I have applied for an account, but I have not received an activation email.
    The email enabling you to activate the account might have ended up in your spam folder. Please check whether this is the case. Should this not be the case, please contact us.
  5. The password I am using is incorrect
    A password must meet a number of requirements:
    - A password may not contain any punctuation marks
     - A password must consist of at least eight characters
     - A password must contain at least one character from each of the following character classes: lower case letters, upper case letters and numbers
     - The password may not contain your user name
    Please check whether your password meets these requirements.

General (misleading invoices)

  1. I have received an invoice that does not seem to be from the BOIP.
    The Registers are public. As such, it is possible for providers of various services to approach you directly. Unfortunately, the practices of a number of companies leave much to be desired. These companies – often operating from outside the Benelux – may approach you offering to register your trademark or design for a substantial sum of money in a vague ‘international register'. Registers of this type are not official and do not provide any kind of trademark or design protection.


  1. What is the status of my trademark application?
    You can view the status of your application in the online register. If you want to check whether we have received your correspondence, please contact the information centre.
  2. Is my trademark still available?
    There are a number of ways you can check whether older trademarks exist.
  3. If my trademark is available, can I then register it?
    The BOIP has no authority to refuse a trademark because it already exists in the register. It is up to the trademark proprietor to act whenever his or her rights are being infringed. This can be done by filing an opposition. The BOIP does, however, have the authority to refuse a trademark if it is unsuitable because, for example, it is not distinctive or if it is descriptive or misleading.


  1. The payment screen does not appear.
    Our payment screen is treated as a pop-up by some browsers. In most cases, the problem can be resolved by changing your browser settings (to allow pop-ups) or by adding www.boip.int as a trusted website.
  2. I cannot download my i-DEPOT certificate.
    A bar appears very shortly and the certificate cannot be downloaded. A setting in your browser is preventing the bar that allows you to download the certificate from appearing. To re-activate this bar, go to: – Internet options, - Security, - Custom level, - Download items/Automatic prompting for file downloads, - ‘activate’.
